Nothing can be more reminiscent of the bleating of an old goat than the ringing of the landline phone! Mmmmmmmmmmmehhh mmmmmmmmmehhh mmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhh...!
Every time I hear it ringing, I feel like hammering it to silence. Ever since I got my cell phone, which was half a decade ago, I have seldom if ever used that ancient piece of device still sitting there in one corner of our family space, ringing every now and then because some ladies such as my mom and my grandmother still love it and can’t live without it!
My loathing for it has mounted to such a height that now I don’t even bother to pick up the phone when it rings. Not even when no one else is around to pick it up. I simply let it bleat itself hoarse. In case of emergencies and urgencies people always call on the cell phone. It’s only some free of cost chitchat that they turn to the landline phone for, which is another thing I absolutely loathe. So I never pick up the phone!
As if ringing alone weren’t enough, the phone always chooses the worst possible times to start ringing in. Imagine the old goat bleating out whenever you are trying hard to eavesdrop on your teenage brother’s cell phone conversation (ahem… Mea culpa)! Or whenever the hero of your favourite TV show is about to unmask the villain, which you are intensely absorbed in, the old goat starts bleating so loudly that it throws you off your chair! Worse still, imagine the old goat ringing only seconds after you had at long last managed to go to sleep. IRRITATING TO THE POWER INFINITY!
Quite surprisingly and funnily enough, there used to be a time, before the invention of cellular phones, when I used to love dashing to the landline telephone whenever it rang. In fact I used to wait for the phone to ring so I could run to receive it before anyone else.
However, the present situation is such that, with all due respect to Mr. Graham Bell, my nostrils flare and my jaw tightens whenever I hear the phone ringing, and I would like nothing better than the SILENCE OF THE GOAT when I am home.
Thus, one of these days the little old red phone will be found scattered in minuscule pieces on the floor...one of these days..

nice post
